Words cannot describe how grateful I am for The Ross Firm. We had some commercial law issues that needed to be addressed promptly. Matt Chapman at The Ross Firm returned my call and had my consultation scheduled within a couple days of me reaching out to the Firm, while other firms were taking a couple days at just returning my calls. Understandably lawyers are always busy, but when anyone has any kind of legal issues, you just want them dealt with as quickly as possible so you can move on. I had the opportunity of selecting any local law firm and got the chance of speaking with other different local lawyers, but as soon as I got off the phone from my consultation with Matt Chapman / The Ross Firm, I immediately knew I was in good hands, and that The Ross Firm had the means and experience to deal with my issue in an effective manner. Just from our brief conversation / consultation, I felt a huge relief as I knew I was dealing with a professional who had done this before. The Ross Firm and Matt had no signs of hesitation on how they were going to deal with my issues, and that played a huge role of importance in my decision to hire them. That was the reaction of confidence I needed to hear before hiring them. Matt was very prompt, handled every tiny little detail / scenario, and was extremely easy to deal with. So were both Nikki and Allison. Matt voiced his own opinion to me not only as a lawyer but as a person, who, if he was in the same situation, the actions he'd take which was very helpful to me. It really was as simple as me handing them the work, and them taking care of everything else. From this point onward (**touch wood**) if any legal issues arise, I'll be going straight to The Ross Firm without a doubt. [read less...]

Business Law

We know business is a dynamic, competition-based reality.  We know you have to make decisions to grow, consolidate, or reposition.

All lawyers will tell you that they know the law, communicate persuasively, bill fairly and report regularly.

We do that.

Here’s what else you can expect:

We operate at the speed of business.

We know business doesn’t always happen during business hours. We know business happens all over the globe.

Today, geography gives way to technology. Different time zones speak of opportunities, not barriers.

A smarter law firm means a more accessible lawyer.

We help local go global.

We employ communication, data collaboration & transfer technology that makes the world smaller, faster and easier for our business clients; whether they are in Southwestern Ontario or Southeast Asia. We can meet, negotiate, sign and close locally or globally.

A smarter law firm means a more productive lawyer.

We don’t reinvent the wheel.

Sometimes all that’s needed is a form, document or tip that can solve problems or issues that repeat in your business.  We create customizable smart forms that you can use as often as you need; flexible enough to allow for changes without leaving you exposed. We track versions, use and currency to make sure you have what you need to operate without having to reinvent the wheel each time you need it.

A smarter law firm means a smarter lawyer.

I very much enjoyed the atmosphere presented at The Ross Firm's Goderich office. I had the pleasure of having my matter looked after by Jenn McMillan. I would highly recommend Jenn McMillan and The Ross Firm. Ms. McMillan assisted me through a very difficult and contentious child access and mobility case in 2015/16. Ms. McMillan is a straight forward, level headed and very intelligent Lawyer which made things very easy for me. She maximized our time strategizing before our court appearances and most importantly she listened. In family law court, Ms. McMillan's knowledge was evident and really assisted in the outcome of my matter. Ms. McMillan was very efficient with her involvement in the matter and she really went to bat for me and for that I am forever grateful to have had her services. I also had the pleasure of meeting with Quinn Ross and Elli Cohen also of The Ross Firm. Both of these gentlemen treated me with the utmost respect, kindness and compassion during what was a very difficult and emotional matter to navigate through. I chose The Ross Firm because of their positive reputation. I was not disappointed. [read less...]

Real Estate Law

People want 3 things from their real estate lawyer:

  1.  If they are buyers…they want the key to their new house.
  2.  If they are sellers…they want the cheque.
  3.  Both want to know it's being done right.

All lawyers will tell you that they know the law, communicate persuasively, bill fairly and report regularly.

We do that.

Here’s what else you can expect:

We communicate across platforms that suit you.

The binary choice of in person or by phone is dead everywhere else, why not in law?  Skype, FaceTime, Text, Email…no problem.  Don’t worry, we still have welcoming offices and make a great cup of coffee so you can feel free to visit any time.

A smarter law firm means a more accessible lawyer.

We digitized our documents to save trees and time.

Behind the scenes, we keep doing the sophisticated searches and due diligence then digitize the documents, you review them on a huge TV monitor and sign them electronically.

A smarter law firm means a more productive lawyer.

We use proprietary processes to complete your deal.

In many cases, we can have you in and out of the office in 20 minutes without ever having touched a single piece of paper.  Your signed documents will be waiting in your email when you leave.

We can of course do it the old-fashioned way if you prefer, but it's much more fun doing it electronically.

A smarter law firm means a smarter lawyer.

Wills & Estate Law

We’ve got some good news and some bad news.

The bad news is that we all have a “best before” date. The good news is that with some planning, those left behind won’t have a legal mess to clean up.

All lawyers will tell you that they know the law, communicate persuasively, bill fairly and report regularly.

We do that.

Here’s what else you can expect:

We understand that the process can be hard.

Contemplating one’s death isn’t fun.  Administering an estate only happens after someone close has passed away.   The last thing you need are barriers in communicating with your lawyer.  We are accessible across all communication platforms that suit you.

A smarter law firm means a more accessible lawyer.

We get to know you before we meet you.

Our electronic Estate Planning Intake process starts before we even meet, and ensures that our first meeting is a productive one.

A smarter law firm means a more productive lawyer.

We use very new tools to deal with a very old need.

Whether we are drafting your Will or assisting executors administering an estate, we make it as seamless and cost-effective as the law will permit. We use up-to-the-minute software and hardware to make the ancient act of succession timely, efficient and effective.

A smarter law firm means a smarter lawyer.

My wife and I worked with Matt Chapman on our wills and estate planning. It was complicated as we have a few businesses and are working with a trust company that would act as executor for the personal and corporate holdings of our estate and in the event of our deaths. We also have young children so we were anxious that everything was completed properly. We found Matt to be informed, patient and thorough throughout the entire process. He was meticulous in reviewing the trust information and pointed out a number of items of concern. Matt liaised directly with the various companies involved to determine that everything was reflective of our best interests and those of our children. In the end we were confident that our affairs were in good order and would have no hesitation recommending Matt to anyone looking for a solicitor. [read less...]

Quinn Ross does not tolerate bullies and he’s got the scars to prove it. After a few “viscerally satisfying” schoolyard encounters, it occurred to Quinn that there had to be a better way to deal with conflict. Law, it seems, was inevitable. Out of the gate, Quinn was a successful litigator at The Ross Firm, with a focus on property, expropriation and employment cases. Over time, as the firm grew, Quinn has shifted his legal focus to business law: corporate commercial transactions, real estate and wills and estates. He has guided Ontario clients in transactions with parties worldwide, including China, Africa, Europe, South America and the United States, to mention a few. Quinn regularly incorporates, reorganizes, structures financing, merges, and purchases and sells federal and provincial corporations. His knowledge of secured transactions helps limit exposure for vendors in a sale, and restrict overreaching lenders during purchases. Quinn heads up the real estate team and treats each real property transaction with the same care and interest whether it is the purchase or sale of a residential home, or a multi-unit, multi-million dollar commercial property. Quinn appreciates the added experience of having litigated real estate matters when they go wrong, so he is keenly aware of potential pitfalls before they occur. Professionally, Quinn currently sits as President of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Bar Association. Quinn is a regular speaker at the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Ontario Bar Association. In his community, Quinn serves as the immediate Past President of the Alzheimer Society of Huron County, and counsel to numerous not-for-profit organizations.

Jenn McMillan has been arguing cases since she was very young. She says that as a child, she enjoyed the challenge of bringing someone to her way of thinking. When she realized there was a job where she could do that “all day, every day,” she thought that practicing law was a perfect fit. As a family lawyer, Jenn believes in educating her clients. During what can be a particularly challenging time, she restores their confidence and re-establishes an element of control. This empowers and enables her clients to determine their own future. Whether she is acting for a father to obtain custody of his young son, arguing for supervised access, acting for a wife to secure support after a long-term relationship, or a parent seeking to restrict or terminate the other parent’s access, each day is a new opportunity to successfully advocate on behalf of her clients to achieve their goals. Jenn also acts for grandparents, family members, or foster parents who are seeking custody of children in their care; these cases often result in adoptions, which are bright spots in what can often be challenging processes. Jenn’s practice also includes the successful resolution of significant property cases dealing with large farming operations and other businesses, as well as income determination cases where expert evidence is employed to prove income. In her community, Jenn is the immediate Past President and current Treasurer of the Huron Law Association (as well as the Perth, Bruce, & Grey Law Associations), and our representative at the Federation of Law Associations of Ontario. She is the immediate Past Co-President of the South West Region Women’s Law Association. Jenn is also a Past President of the Board of Directors of Victim Services of Huron County, and a Past President of the Huron Perth Community Legal Clinic.

Elli has had great success in large, complicated property cases including matters that dealt with international property, corporate interests, family businesses, farm valuations, quota, and crops, stocks and bonds as well as other financial equities. His experience working at CIBC and Merrill Lynch in Toronto before heading off to law school has stood Elli and his clients in good stead. Danielle Landry

Since her call to the Bar, Danielle has practiced civil litigation, handling primarily personal injury cases. She has extensive experience with complex catastrophic personal injury cases. In addition, Danielle has a large criminal law practice. She has successfully conducted criminal law trials before Judge alone and Judge with Jury. Her cases include some of the most serious charges such as attempt to commit murder. Danielle was born and raised in Moncton, New Brunswick. In her early years, Danielle remembers family members commenting on her intensity and unbounded intellectual curiosity. They referred to her as the “old soul”. It is no wonder, at the age of three, this “old soul” found a passion in ballet and by middle school was dancing six days a week after school. At high school, she joined the Pre-Professional Division of dance and became a member of The DanceEast Young Company. This experience, Danielle says taught her discipline, commitment and the importance of hard work to achieve her goals. Danielle is passionate about helping people. While at Dalhousie University, she worked with students selected from refugee camps to receive sponsorship and complete university studies; spent a summer in Bagamoyo, Tanzania teaching English to elementary school aged children; and, volunteered for three years at the Ronald McDonald House as a weekend and overnight volunteer, where she assisted children and their families with finding a home away from home while the children were receiving lifesaving medical care. These experiences greatly expanded her world view, taught her true empathy, and gave Danielle the perspective on what really matters in life. Danielle had planned to become a doctor, (hence her neuroscience degree) but lawyers at the law firm where she worked as a summer student, convinced her that law was her intended future. Danielle earned her Bachelor of Science (Bsc), Honours in Neuroscience from Dalhousie University (2009), followed by her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from The University of New Brunswick (2012). She was called to the bar in Ontario in September 2013. Danielle has successfully represented clients at all levels of court including the Ontario Court of Justice, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal for Ontario. Danielle has been a Director on the Board of Directors at the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce, since 2014 and is currently an acting Vice President.

Growing up and working on the family farm just outside of Clinton, Ontario taught Michelle Hol many important lessons: the value of hard work, the importance of seeing the big picture while paying attention to detail, and working until the job is done. After completing her Psychology undergraduate degree through the Scholar’s Electives Program at the University of Western Ontario, Michelle was eager to return to her family’s farm and a job as a law clerk with The Ross Firm. Practicing in real estate and corporate commercial, Michelle quickly realized that working in the legal field was something she enjoyed doing and returned to London to attend Western Law School. Upon graduating law school, Michelle obtained a position at a large Hamilton law firm where she gained considerable experience in corporate-commercial law, including purchase and sale of businesses, corporate reorganizations, corporate financing, real estate and wills and estates. While Michelle enjoyed the people and the work in Hamilton, she determined it was time to return to her roots and moved back to Huron County. Michelle rejoined The Ross Firm upon her return, this time as an Associate lawyer. Michelle is engaged in a general business law practice, and assists clients with all their corporate/commercial, real estate, and wills/estate needs. Michelle’s practice has a special emphasis on advising farmers and agri-businesses as well as entrepreneurs and new start-ups. Michelle is a member of the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors, the Ontario Bar Association and the Christian Legal Fellowship.

As a child Jenna was frequently told “you should be a lawyer when you grow up”. That thought always stuck with her and led to ultimately being called to the Ontario Bar in 2017. Before her call to the Bar, Jenna completed her Undergraduate degree at the University of Guelph and then earned her Bachelors of Law from the University of Kent, England. Having grown up in Port Elgin, Jenna always knew she wanted to come back to the area to start her legal career and build her practice. Her knowledge of the area brings with it a strong understanding of the community in which she works as well as history that lends itself to better serving her clients. Before joining the Ross Firm, Jenna worked at an established Port Elgin practice and then as a sole practitioner in her own office. At the Ross Firm Jenna continues to build upon her knowledge and experience in real estate and estates law with a view to expanding her practice in these areas. Mikayla Greig

Mikayla is a family law lawyer, with The Ross Firm. She has successfully handled family law cases from complex prenups to negotiated separation agreements. Her portfolio of cases includes child and spousal support to contested custody and access cases, winning sole custody of children as well as obtaining an Order of supervised access against an opposing parent. She has also dealt with complex property files involving everything from farm equipment and land to stocks, bonds, the matrimonial home and complex pension plans. Mikayla was born to become a lawyer. She remembers growing up in the country outside of Owen Sound along with a menagerie of pets – horses, ponies, ducks, geese, rabbits, turtles, fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, dogs, and cats, (not all at the same time). In order to persuade her parents for each additional pet, Mikayla, as a child, created a contract, complete with signature line, outlining her “ask” and agreeing to feed, clean and care for her mixed brood. Faced with a signed legal document, how could her parents say no? Until taking law in high school, Mikayla had actually planned on becoming a police officer like her brother but after being exposed to law courses in high school, her career path changed. Mikayla received a 10 with Honours in Criminology and Sociology from the University of Western Ontario in 2015. During her undergraduate years at Western, Mikayla returned home in the summer months to play women’s rugby for the Bruce County Banshees out of Tiverton. She also played varsity rugby for Western University and was a member of the triathlon club. As an undergrad, Mikayla acted as a co-facilitator for a program called Changing Ways, a primarily court-mandated program whose mission statement is to assist men in ending their violent behaviour towards the women and children in their lives. She received a Juris Doctor from Lakehead University in 2018, with a first-class standing. During law school Mikayla acted as a VP for the Women in Law committee. She also took part, as a research assistant in the development of the first comparative human rights research database in Canada, designed to helps both the public and legal practitioners navigate human rights law in Canada. After attending law school in Thunder Bay, Mikayla happily returned to her home town, Owen Sound where she completed her articles and now practices family law with The Ross Firm. Mikayla consider her emotional intelligence or “people skills”, as one of her strengths as a lawyer. She listens intently to each client, showing them empathy, patience and understanding when they are going through a very tough and emotionally-charged life altering event. She knows sometimes her clients – mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, foster parents, family members – are scared, and she works to make them feel a little less intimidated by the process. Mikayla believes in educating clients, and restoring their confidence. She works to help them re-establish control over their lives and in the end, enabling them to determine their own futures. Outside of work, Mikayla enjoys reading, cycling, and travelling.

Paul Ross

bio
education

Paul’s route to practice was far less direct than that of many of the other lawyers at The Ross Firm. After graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School (when it was still located at Osgoode Hall), he worked at the Toronto Telegram as a news reporter, as a Queen’s Park speechwriter for several of Bill Davis’ Conservative cabinet ministers, as the editor-in-chief of a travel magazine, and he also authored a published novel. Paul Ross has been practicing law for more than 50 years. That’s a whole lot of water over the dam. He shakes his head in wonder over the changes that have taken place in the law and with technology in a half-century. Paul prides himself on being there when the “young lions” pop their head into his office to get the old man’s take on a complex issue. The patriarch of The Ross Firm founded it first as a sole practitioner in 1980. He was joined by his wife, Heather Joy Ross, in 1984. It was this addition that created the foundation for the current iteration of the firm. Paul is passionate about excellence, technology, creativity and personal growth. He’s excited by where the firm is going and sees the younger lawyers “taking The Ross Firm to a whole new level.” Paul muses that when he came to Huron County from Toronto some 37 years ago, to work for the late E. Beecher Menzies, Q.C., in Clinton, Ontario, he could never have imagined the growth of his own law firm, first in Goderich and expanding into the City of Stratford, and now in The Town of Kincardine.

Heather Joy Ross

bio
education

If you ask any lawyer at The Ross Firm “who’s the best lawyer in the shop,” the answer is Heather Joy Ross. Disciplined, ethically rigorous and highly intelligent, she is the definition of the consummate advocate. Throughout her career Heather has been prepared, knowledgeable and determined. This approach earned her the reputation as a “go to” lawyer in the region for men and women alike. Spouses often raced to retain Heather after their relationship broke down. Whether this was because they wanted her on their side or to avoid having her against them, is a matter of some debate. It is this reputation and approach that forms the foundation of The Ross Firm today. Heather has been a leader in her profession virtually from her first day at law school: she was a mentor to fellow students, and the recipient of three academic awards. As a practicing lawyer, Heather tackled issues of domestic abuse and gender inequality and broke new ground when both subjects were not in the forefront of legal and judicial thinking. Heather describes herself as a warrior, and says that being a lawyer gave her the tools to help make change, particularly for women and girls in our society. However, her passion and big-picture thinking are larger than her legal practice. The original work she did to help establish safe houses for women in Huron County led to the creation of the Huron Women’s Shelter in Goderich. She’s a founder of South West Region Women’s Law Association. Throughout her career and to the present she is a mentor to women lawyers, helping them realize their professional and personal aspirations. As an academic, Heather was an adjunct professor of law, designing and teaching courses in ethics and family law practice and procedure at her alma mater, the Faculty of Law at The University of Western Ontario. Heather was elected as a Bencher (a governor) of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1999. She has contributed significantly to the regulation of the legal profession in Ontario, particularly in her work at the Law Society on the redrafting of the Rules of Professional Conduct, the creation of the standing committee on Equity and Aboriginal Issues, and her service on the Human Rights Monitoring Group. Three subsequent elections resulted in her being granted the honour of “Life Bencher”, a position she holds today, taking on an adjudicative role in lawyer and paralegal disciplinary hearings. An engaged and insightful jurist, Heather shares her skill sitting as a Superior Court of Justice Deputy Judge of the Small Claims Court. Her most recent role at The Ross Firm is that of General Counsel. She provides sage and cogent advice to the firm and its lawyers on matters of ethics, professional responsibility and practice management. There is no one better for the task. When she’s not working, mentoring or leading, Heather finds satisfaction in creative outlets like interior design, painting and gardening. In many ways, both personally and professionally, Heather has made the whole world her canvas.
