Business Law
We know business is a dynamic, competition-based reality. We know you have to make decisions to grow, consolidate, or reposition.
All lawyers will tell you that they know the law, communicate persuasively, bill fairly and report regularly.
We do that.
Here’s what else you can expect:
• We operate at the speed of business.
We know business doesn’t always happen during business hours. We know business happens all over the globe.
Today, geography gives way to technology. Different time zones speak of opportunities, not barriers.
A smarter law firm means a more accessible lawyer.
• We help local go global.
We employ communication, data collaboration & transfer technology that makes the world smaller, faster and easier for our business clients; whether they are in Southwestern Ontario or Southeast Asia. We can meet, negotiate, sign and close locally or globally.
A smarter law firm means a more productive lawyer.
• We don’t reinvent the wheel.
Sometimes all that’s needed is a form, document or tip that can solve problems or issues that repeat in your business. We create customizable smart forms that you can use as often as you need; flexible enough to allow for changes without leaving you exposed. We track versions, use and currency to make sure you have what you need to operate without having to reinvent the wheel each time you need it.
A smarter law firm means a smarter lawyer.
At The Ross Firm, Business Law stands for:

I am more than satisfied with Jenn McMillan and The Ross Firm for their services throughout my split with my ex and the creation of my Will. All questions that I had were answered quickly, and very helpful. It was beautiful to my soul learning what my rights are as a father to my children. Really lifted a huge weight off my chest and gave me my confidence to maneuver life to my fullest again. I asked Jenn to write up the fairest settlement for me and my ex, and fair it was. My ex came to her senses and signed. It's been a year and we do the best parenting now for my kids. It was long overdue. I wish everyone could co-parent together, so good for the kids. I do suggest Jenn McMillan very often to people as she is very easy to talk to and makes you feel comfortable, and does her job well also giving you peace of mind. [read less...]

Coroner’s Inquest
Losing a loved one is the most challenging situation any of us can face. Having your loved one’s death be the subject of a Coroner’s Inquest makes this even more challenging and overwhelming. Coroner’s Inquest are public hearings conducted to inform the public about the circumstances of a death. They are conducted before a jury of five community members to determine:
- The identity of the deceased
- Date of death
- Location of death
- Medical cause of death; and
- By what means (natural causes, accident, homicide, suicide, or undetermined).
Families of the deceased, and other affected entities are entitled to apply for standing and are then afforded an opportunity to testify, cross examine witnesses, and propose recommendations on how to prevent future deaths. The Ross Firm is dedicated to helping families and affected entities through the entire Coroner’s Inquest process, from: applying for standing, preparing clients and expert witnesses to testify, to cross-examining witnesses at the Inquest, preparing submissions and crafting recommendations.
Here’s what else you can expect:
- We understand the unique and important role Inquests play.
We understand the incredible role that Inquests present to the family and to the public to actively contribute to the development and modification of policies and laws that will significantly influence the future and will commemorate the memory of a loved one. We’re there for you to support you through this process, whenever, and however, you need us. In person? Yes. Phone? Sure. Email? Of course. Skype, Facetime, Zoom, text? Absolutely.
A smarter law firm means a more accessible lawyer.
- We want to get to know and your loved one.
Our electronic Intake process starts before we even meet. This helps us help you faster and makes sure we get every detail we need to advocate for you and your loved one right from the start.
A smarter law firm means a more productive lawyer.
- We use technology to move faster and keep your costs down.
We run a paperless practice and use sophisticated technology to automate administrative tasks- so you aren’t paying for them. We want to do everything we can to support families while keeping the costs down for them in participating in this process. We will also help families apply for all applicable reimbursement programs offered to support them in participating in the process and not being burdened with legal fees.
A smarter law firm means a smarter lawyer.

My wife and I worked with The Ross Firm on our wills and estate planning. It was complicated as we have a few businesses and are working with a trust company that would act as executor for the personal and corporate holdings of our estate and in the event of our deaths. We also have young children so we were anxious that everything was completed properly. We found The Ross Firm to be informed, patient and thorough throughout the entire process. They were meticulous in reviewing the trust information and pointed out a number of items of concern. Quinn Ross
Quinn Ross does not tolerate bullies and he’s got the scars to prove it. After a few “viscerally satisfying” schoolyard encounters, it occurred to Quinn that there had to be a better way to deal with conflict. Law, it seems, was inevitable.
Out of the gate, Quinn was a successful litigator at The Ross Firm, with a focus on property, expropriation and employment cases. Over time, as the firm grew, Quinn has shifted his legal focus to business law: corporate commercial transactions, real estate and wills and estates. He has guided Ontario clients in transactions with parties worldwide, including China, Africa, Europe, South America and the United States, to mention a few.
Quinn regularly incorporates, reorganizes, structures financing, merges, and purchases and sells federal and provincial corporations. His knowledge of secured transactions helps limit exposure for vendors in a sale, and restrict overreaching lenders during purchases.
Quinn heads up the real estate team and treats each real property transaction with the same care and interest whether it is the purchase or sale of a residential home, or a multi-unit, multi-million dollar commercial property. Quinn appreciates the added experience of having litigated real estate matters when they go wrong, so he is keenly aware of potential pitfalls before they occur.
Professionally, Quinn is a past President of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Bar Association. Quinn is a regular speaker at the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Ontario Bar Association. In his community, Quinn serves as the immediate Past President of the Alzheimer Society of Huron County, and counsel to numerous not-for-profit organizations.

Jenn McMillan
Jenn McMillan has been arguing cases since she was very young. She says that as a child, she enjoyed the challenge of bringing someone to her way of thinking. When she realized there was a job where she could do that “all day, every day,” she thought that practicing law was a perfect fit.
As a family lawyer, Jenn believes in educating her clients. During what can be a particularly challenging time, she restores their confidence and re-establishes an element of control. This empowers and enables her clients to determine their own future.
Whether she is acting for a father to obtain custody of his young son, arguing for supervised access, acting for a wife to secure support after a long-term relationship, or a parent seeking to restrict or terminate the other parent’s access, each day is a new opportunity to successfully advocate on behalf of her clients to achieve their goals.
Jenn also acts for grandparents, family members, or foster parents who are seeking custody of children in their care; these cases often result in adoptions, which are bright spots in what can often be challenging processes.
Jenn’s practice also includes the successful resolution of significant property cases dealing with large farming operations and other businesses, as well as income determination cases where expert evidence is employed to prove income.
In her community, Jenn is the immediate Past President and current Treasurer of the Huron Law Association (as well as the Perth, Bruce, & Grey Law Associations), and our representative at the Federation of Law Associations of Ontario. She is the immediate Past Co-President of the South West Region Women’s Law Association. Jenn is also a Past President of the Board of Directors of Victim Services of Huron County, and a Past President of the Huron Perth Community Legal Clinic.

Elli Cohen
Elli Cohen is not afraid to take on difficult cases. He is relentless in the pursuit of his client’s rights. Elli has found that much of the work he’s taken on in the last few years has been referral work from other lawyers, including appeals and particularly complex financial cases.
Elli has had great success in large, complicated property cases including matters that dealt with international property, corporate interests, family businesses, farm valuations, quota, and crops, stocks and bonds as well as other financial equities. His experience working at CIBC and Merrill Lynch in Toronto before heading off to law school has stood Elli and his clients in good stead.
And while he’s no longer close to the bright lights of Toronto, Elli is doing what he can to shine a light on the arts in Blyth, Ontario as the President of Board of Directors for both the Blyth Centre for the Arts and Blyth’s Campaign 14/19.

Lisa Toner
In late 2022, after 28 years of practising law in her hometown of Kitchener-Waterloo, Lisa moved to Port Elgin and joined The Ross Firm.
Lisa draws on her extensive experience in Wills and Estates Law to advise clients on their most important trusts and estates matters and to effectively protect their interests when disputes arise. She is particularly attuned to the vulnerabilities and unique legal needs of seniors, and those with disabilities.
Having previously worked as a lawyer within large financial institutions, and with a large Waterloo Region firm, Lisa regularly counsels high net worth individuals, family businesses and corporations on complex matters involving trusts, estates, and wills, as well as estate administration (probate) matters. Lisa enjoys tackling complicated estate planning issues, and producing pragmatic and sustainable solutions.
In addition to estate solicitor’s work, Lisa is a skilled litigator and regularly protects her clients’ interests in matters such as estate and power of attorney disputes, passing of accounts applications, and will challenges. She has appeared at every level of Court in Ontario; however, she is also a strong proponent of negotiated dispute resolution, and an experienced mediator.
Lisa has served on the Executive of the Trusts and Estates Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association, and various subcommittees, since 2014. She was particularly proud to serve on an OBA Committee for the creation of an Elder Law Section, and is a member of the Elder Law section of the Canadian Bar Association. She enjoys mentoring younger lawyers and speaking at various Continuing Professional Development programs for other lawyers in the estates field.

After attending law school in Thunder Bay, Mikayla happily returned to her home town of Owen Sound, where she completed her articles and was called to the bar in Ontario in September 2018.
Mikayla considers her emotional intelligence – or “people skills” – to be one of her strengths as a lawyer. She listens intently to each client, showing them empathy, patience and understanding when they are going through a very tough and emotionally charged life-altering event. She knows that sometimes her clients – mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, foster parents, family members – are scared, and she works to make them feel a little less intimidated by the process.
Mikayla believes in educating clients, and restoring their confidence. She works to help them re-establish control over their lives and in the end, enables them to determine their own futures.
Outside of work, Mikayla enjoys reading, cycling and travelling.

Paul Ross
Paul’s route to practice was far less direct than that of many of the other lawyers at The Ross Firm. After graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School (when it was still located at Osgoode Hall), he worked at the Toronto Telegram as a news reporter, as a Queen’s Park speechwriter for several of Bill Davis’ Conservative cabinet ministers, as the editor-in-chief of a travel magazine, and he also authored a published novel.
Paul Ross has been practicing law for more than 50 years. That’s a whole lot of water over the dam. He shakes his head in wonder over the changes that have taken place in the law and with technology in a half-century. Paul prides himself on being there when the “young lions” pop their head into his office to get the old man’s take on a complex issue.
The patriarch of The Ross Firm founded it first as a sole practitioner in 1980. He was joined by his wife, Heather Joy Ross, in 1984. It was this addition that created the foundation for the current iteration of the firm.
Paul is passionate about excellence, technology, creativity and personal growth. He’s excited by where the firm is going and sees the younger lawyers “taking The Ross Firm to a whole new level.”
Paul muses that when he came to Huron County from Toronto some 37 years ago, to work for the late E. Beecher Menzies, Q.C., in Clinton, Ontario, he could never have imagined the growth of his own law firm, first in Goderich and expanding into the City of Stratford, and now in The Town of Kincardine.

Heather Joy Ross LSM
If you ask any lawyer at The Ross Firm “who’s the best lawyer in the shop,” the answer is Heather Joy Ross. Disciplined, ethically rigorous and highly intelligent, she is the definition of the consummate advocate. Throughout her career Heather has been prepared, knowledgeable and determined. This approach earned her the reputation as a “go to” lawyer in the region for men and women alike. Spouses often raced to retain Heather after their relationship broke down. Whether this was because they wanted her on their side or to avoid having her against them, is a matter of some debate. It is this reputation and approach that forms the foundation of The Ross Firm today.
Heather has been a leader in her profession virtually from her first day at law school: she was a mentor to fellow students, and the recipient of three academic awards. As a practicing lawyer, Heather tackled issues of domestic abuse and gender inequality and broke new ground when both subjects were not in the forefront of legal and judicial thinking. Heather describes herself as a warrior, and says that being a lawyer gave her the tools to help make change, particularly for women and girls in our society. However, her passion and big-picture thinking are larger than her legal practice. The original work she did to help establish safe houses for women in Huron County led to the creation of the Huron Women’s Shelter in Goderich. She’s a founder of South West Region Women’s Law Association. Throughout her career and to the present she is a mentor to women lawyers, helping them realize their professional and personal aspirations.
As an academic, Heather was an adjunct professor of law, designing and teaching courses in ethics and family law practice and procedure at her alma mater, the Faculty of Law at The University of Western Ontario. Heather was elected as a Bencher (a governor) of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1999. She has contributed significantly to the regulation of the legal profession in Ontario, particularly in her work at the Law Society on the redrafting of the Rules of Professional Conduct, the creation of the standing committee on Equity and Aboriginal Issues, her service on the Human Rights Monitoring Group, and taking on an adjudicative role in lawyer and paralegal disciplinary hearings. Three subsequent elections resulted in her being granted the honour of “Life Bencher”.
An engaged and insightful jurist, Heather shared her skills sitting as a Superior Court of Justice Deputy Judge of the Small Claims Court. Her last role at The Ross Firm was that of General Counsel. She provided sage and cogent advice to the firm and its lawyers on matters of ethics, professional responsibility and practice management.
On December 8, 2020, she was awarded the Law Society Medal – given for outstanding service within the profession to lawyers who have made a significant contribution to the profession, in accordance with the highest ideals of the legal profession.
When she’s not mentoring or leading, Heather finds satisfaction in creative outlets like interior design, and painting. In many ways, both personally and professionally, Heather has made the whole world her canvas.
