Emely Melendez Rodriguez

Corporate/Commercial Associate Lawyer

Emely Melendez is an associate in The Ross Firm’s Corporate Team. Since her call to the bar in 2018, Emely has practiced in several areas, including corporate/commercial law, immigration and refugee protection law, employment law, military law, and healthcare law.

Emely’s practice focuses on complex corporate and commercial issues, with emphasis on risk and contract management.

Much of Emely’s experience has been working in in-house roles, which Emely says has allowed her to see the bigger picture, the interconnectedness of the law, when working with clients in high-stakes negotiations with practical and
results-oriented strategic advice. Emely believes in educating her clients to fully understand the work that is being completed so they may confidently go forward and reach their goals.

Emely graduated from the University of Western Ontario (UWO) in 2011 with an Honours Specialization in International Relations and a Major in French Language and Literature. During her time at UWO, Emely also attended the Université de Tours in Tours, France as part of an international exchange and was regularly part of the honour roll.

Emely graduated from the University of Ottawa’s Programme de droit canadien in 2015, a bi-jural program in common law and civil law. She was a President of the Latin American Law Student’s Association in 2013 and was a student-collaborator to the University of Ottawa’s Human Rights Research and Education Centre, where she contributed to the submission of two amicus curiae on indigenous land protection rights in Latin America that were put before the Inter-American Court for Human Rights.

Emely has also been a member of the Royal Canadian Navy since 2007. Serving the military has allowed Emely to visit many parts of Canada and has made her well-versed in matters touching on federal level human resources, financial management, grievance management, fairness investigation, and public affairs. In 2020, she was awarded her Canadian Decoration for Meritorious service. She is currently the departmental chief for the Navy’s Reserve division in London, Ontario.

When not working, Emely enjoys long-distance cycling, fitness, and outdoor sports. She also loves exploring her creating side and enjoys spending time trying new recipes in the kitchen.
